Week 2: No Plastic Challenge (2024)

Week 2

Wins!

A trip to Ashburton for work, so popped in to their grocer and fishmonger-deli. Fruit & veg plastic free, crab in my own container and preserved artichokes in their compostable cups which I wonder how compostable they actually are, but appreciate the sentiment.

Slightly appalled by the cost of the smoked haddock, beautifully wrapped in paper, but feel a certain reverence while cooking it to make a chowder that feeds us for two meals. Have to admit that the flavour is amazing and so much more enjoyable to cook that peeling back plastic packaging off a limp piece of over dyed fish, probably at this point covered in a residue of micro-plastics.

Special effort to buy chicken food in paper bags & tinned cat food. . Interesting that they packaging also highlights it is 100% recyclable unlike those pouches which are so extremely convenient but surely an environmental disaster.

New puppy in the house, however, and his highness’s food only comes in plastic (mini puppy-sized fail!)

Fails!

Although we get Re-rooted oat milk in reusable glass containers from Riverford, having a couple of cereal eating teens in the house meant that a few emergency tetra-plastic oat milks were required.

Reminded myself that each day I open little plastic pots to use daily contacts, and I haven’t yet found a fluoride toothpaste not in a plastic tube.
