Week 4 (2022) #Attempt 2

Challenges

Charlotte:

Had a slight sense of humour failure as the Christmas cooking club list came back this week with requirements for marshmallows and toffees – could I really face another trip into town in search of loose confectionary? Cheered up by the realisation that fish fingers make the perfect plastic-free convenience food.

Ali:

Success

Charlotte:

Very excited to report that I sent husband off with the hessian bag full of boxes and he came back with refills of frozen fruit, milk and veg. A successful delegation to another family member and a much needed break from the responsibility of shopping plastic free! Also some handy sachets of cleaning equipment that just need adding to water in a spray container - refills that don’t require lugging heavy containers around.

It also turns out we did not invent a plastic free month and there is a whole organisation Plastic-Free July dedicated to this very cause: https://www.plasticfreejuly.org/

We are going to join in next year…so watch this space for July 2023!

Failures

Lucy:

Charlotte:

I think a true test of success and failure will be to see how long I can keep up good habits and whether there has been any long lasting impact of this plastic-free month. The question from my youngest daughter on the eve of 1st December , “Can you buy Skips tomorrow please,” makes me think there is still some way to go in creating a whole-family change.

Ali:

Costs

Had an interesting discussion with the owner of zero waste store who says that she matches her prices with supermarkets and that margins are low. Apparently supermarkets who have trailed refills have back-tracked as they don’t make enough money on it. Which set me wondering where are they making the extra money on packaged food: Is it through encouraging us to buy more than we need and that eventually going to waste?
